The Sunshine Issue
We are rapidly approaching the winter solstice, the shortest day of
the year. It marks the time when the sun is at it's
southernmost path across the earth. It is the time of the year
when the sunlight that reaches the northern hemisphere has to travel
through the most of earth's atmosphere before reaching us. It
is also a time when outdoor activities wind down, and when outdoors
we wear long pants, long sleeve shirts, hats and caps.
Our bodies need sunlight to make Vitamin D. In a natural world, this
wouldn't be a problem since Vitamin D is easily stored by the body.
So the Vitamin D that we made in the summer would last for the
winter.
Unfortunately, we have become a sun-phobic culture. Dermatologists
have for years been recommending the use of UV blocking sunscreens,
hats, and minimal exposure to the sun. Given the loss of the
protective ozone layer, this may be good advice. However it
may not be and definitely is bad advice regarding the making of
Vitamin D. We simply do not make enough to get us through the
winter months, and probably not even enough for the summer months.
Readers of the
Healing
Points HealthBlog are already aware of the many benefits of
supplementation with Vitamin D. It is preventative for several types
of cancer, is vital for bone health, prevents falls in the elderly,
and is important for health gums.
The recommended daily dosage for Vitamin D has been raised to
800-1000 IU's per day. However, some authorities in the field
recommend twice that for people over 50, and especially for women
over 50. I don't think it's a good idea to wait that long. The
good news is that Vitamin D is very inexpensive and starting
supplementing with it now can have tremendous benefits. Ten
dollars should buy a two months supply from a reputable
manufacturer. Well worth it. To find more information
about vitamin D, visit the

A Perfect Holiday Gift
Have you run into the problem of what gift to get for friends and
family members? Tired of the same old same old?
soundJourney CD's can make an amazing gift of healing for anyone.
Here is a small article that is in this issue of The Malibu Times
magazine:
"Division by Zero" from soundJourney
This isn't your grandfather's holiday soundtrack; it's best
listened to on headphones. Topanga resident Richard
Grossman, L.Ac., O.M.D., Ph.D. started composing music for sound
healing to relax his acupuncture patients. It led him to
shamanic explorations on the otherworldly CD he (and other
wonderful musicians) plays native instruments from angels and
ancestors of many ancient traditions to guide you on a trip to
your inner self, "the golden sanctuary of your Spirit" (Written
by Judith Lazarus)

even offer holiday packaging and 2nd day and next-day shipping for
those last minute gifts. You can also find soundJourney clothing and other unique
gifts there too.
soundJourney on the Road
I recently did a small tour of Arizona where I participated in
Arizona Choices, a health and wellness exposition and conference in
Tucson. I also gave presentations at Arcosanti and in Sedona.
The amazing power of sound as a healing tool was brought home to
many people, and several people reported life-changing experiences.
I also had the honor of speaking on a panel with sound healing
legends Steven Halpern and Paul Horn. It was truly wonderful
to share experiences with them and to learn even more about the
miracle of sound. It just keeps getting more powerful and more
beautiful.
I hope you can make it to one of the upcoming soundJourney
experiences. The next one will be December 9 at the Regenesis
Center in Santa Monica (see below).
Blessings and Peace,
Richard
