On  Monday October 27, 2003 Dr. Grossman will be providing a group sound-healing experience for the Monday evening after the New Moon. These on-going events will be held at The Elder Tree in Topanga Canyon. The time will be from 7:30 till about 9:00pm, and a $15.00 donation is requested. All are invited to enjoy this profound experience of healing and consciousness. Please RSVP if you would like more information or reservations as space is somewhat limited.

If you can't make this one, the next Monday Evening Sound Healing event will be held on November 24, 2003, and the following on December 29th, so mark your calendars!

There are many ways of entering altered states of consciousness through the use of sound. The gong played masterfully can produce an exquisite ethereal resonance so that a journey to other realms is easily realized.  I simply did not want the experience to end.

The Ephedra Controversy

Ephedra (Ephedra sinensis) or Ma Huang is the latest herb embroiled in great controversy. This week, Gov. Davis made it illegal to use Ephedra for diet or stimulant uses, while allowing it's use in Traditional Oriental Medicine. Like any other medication, food, coffee, tea, or even water, Ephedra when used in excess or incorrectly is a dangerous herb.  It can cause heart problems and even, as we have seen several times, death.

However, when used safely, and this is what is not being talked about in the press, Ephedra is one of the most valuable of herbs that has been used safely in Traditional Oriental Medicine for thousands of years . . . with no adverse side effects.

Excessive consumption of ephedrine causes typical side effects of sympathetic hyper-stimulation including headaches, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, palpitations, tachycardia, insomnia, tremor, anxiety. These effects are less noticeable in consumption of the whole herb, and it has been suggested that the other constituents may modify the effects of the ephedrine alkaloids

Ma Huang has been used for over 5000 years in China. Ma Huang is never given alone in Chinese medicine, but always used in formulae combined with other herbs that modulate its stimulant effects without altering its actions on the lungs and kidneys. The crude herb may also be treated before use (by boiling in water or cooking with honey) to change its characteristics. Its principal uses in TCM are to disperse external wind, and aid movement of lung qi. It is also take for chills, fevers and coughs, and in combination with Rehemannia glutinosa as a kidney yin deficiency tonic. In Chinese medicine, the root is also used- its therapeutic effects being almost opposite to the stem eg hypotensive as opposed to hypertensive (Hikono,1983).

Ephedra and its alkaloids have gained widespread popularity among the sports and body-building communities for weight reduction. The combination of ephedrine with caffeine (E.C), and of both with aspirin (E.C.A.) is used by body builders in combination with caloric restriction to "cut" fat. Several clinical trials have shown these combinations to be more effective than placebo in weight loss, but these trials have tended to underemphasize the side effects. (Toubro,1993; Astrup,1993) Body builders tend to use ECA for short periods and on an interval basis.

Popular OTC "weight loss" and "natural speed" products, based either on Ephedra herb or more usually on isolated ephedrine alkaloids have attracted considerable "bad press" in recent years. These reports reached hysterical proportions in Texas in the mid nineties (MMWR,1996) resulting in attempts to ban Ephedra product by the state authorities. The FDA responded by issuing ultra conservative dosage guidelines for Ephedra herbal products, expressed in terms of total ephedrine alkaloid maximum recommended doses. The retail and MLM market is still replete with products purporting to be legal or natural speed and "natural" weight loss agents that contain variable amounts of Ephedra alkaloids or synthetic ephedrine and which will likely continue to be subject to consumer abuse and potential adverse reactions.

Spam Arrest, A great service!

Over the past months the amount of email spam I've received has grown at a near exponential rate.  While away for a four-day seminar i returned to find over a thousand email advertisements in my inbox.  That was absurd, so I began a search for a service that would weed out the unwanted emails.

Spam Arrest seemed to offer the best technology of filtering out, forever, this growing plague.

If you are troubled by spam and would like to try a cost-effective way to end it (and offer a bit of support for Healing Points as well) click on the box below and you will be taken to their site.  They also offer a 30 day free trial.  After using it for 4 days and finding only emails I want to read in my inbox, I'm convinced.
